The CoE Bus Rapid transit + (BRT+), Santiago, Chile
Dr. Ricardo Giesen is the current Director of the BRT Centre of Excellence. He is Associate Professor and former Director of the Department of Transport Engineering and Logistics of the Pontifical Catholic University. Dr. Giesen specializes in operations of transport systems, public transit planning and operations, and logistics and distribution optimization.
He earned his Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2007..
Established in 2010, the centre is led by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) first with Professor Juan Carlos Munoz as Project Leader. Since 2018, Dr Ricardo Giesen took over the lead of the Centre. Other core partners are: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Sydney, and EMBARQ – The WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, including its network of centres of sustainable transport.
The main goal of this CoE is to develop a new framework for planning, design, financing, implementation and operation of BRT in urban areas, giving clear guidelines to decision makers on when and how BRT projects can effectively enhance mobility and meet accessibility needs.
These guidelines will provide a major contribution to changing the way decision makers address investment and design plans for configuring urban mobility systems. An essential goal of CoE ALC-BRT is to identify elements that are transferable between existing and prospective BRT systems and elements that are project site specific.
The CoE has published key findings from the work so far in the book “Restructuring public transport through Bus Rapid Transit” (Policy Press 2016).
