Opportunities for funding
Under the MAC program, VREF has a number of opportunities available for researchers and practioners with interest in the area of sustainable and equitable mobility and access in sub-Saharan African cities.
The following opportunities are available through VREF:
Call for Proposals: Catalysing Curriculum Change at Universities in SSA 2022 Pdf, 1.3 MB.

Through this call, VREF invites applications for grants to support the development of new, online postgraduate courses, modules, and educational resources specifically in areas related to urban transport and mobility at universities in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
The call is an opportunity for scholars and teachers in sub-Saharan Africa to contribute to
renewing university-based education, while also strengthening knowledge and capacity
among the next generation of SSA researchers and practitioners.
The call is a pilot initiative within the MAC programme and, if the initiative is successful, VREF foresees issuing a series of similar calls on an annual basis over the next few years.

MAC Mobility Grants Pdf, 447.1 kB.
VREF invites researchers, Ph.D. students and advanced master students from Sub-Saharan African (SSA) universities to apply for a MAC Mobility Grant to support a visit to another SSA university with up to SEK 30 000. The MAC Mobility Grant provides support for researchers, teachers or advanced students to undertake short visits (approximately 2-4 weeks) in order to work with researchers/teachers/students in another research environment within sub-Saharan Africa. While this grant is open for both senior and junior researchers, a special budget is earmarked for younger researchers.
The invitation to apply for grants 2022 will be open until October 31, 2022. In 2022, the VREF Secretariat will handle applications at four occasions with the following closing dates: January 31, May 15, August 15 and October 31. The applicant will be informed of the VREF decision within two weeks after each closing date.

Fourth Call for Research Proposals:

VREF invites applications for research grants to support projects that will be implemented 2023 under the VREF programme “Mobility and Access in African Cities” (MAC). This Call is the fourth one of the MAC programme, following earlier calls in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Invitation to submit an Expression of Interest in writing a think piece on gender-informed mobility planning and policy: Status, barriers, ways forward

The Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) programme on “Mobility and Access in African cities” (MAC) is currently providing opportunities for researchers at SSA universities to write short “think pieces” on specific themes that have strong relevance for achieving sustainable mobility and equitable access in African cities.
This time, VREF would like to commission a scholar who is based at a SSA university to write a think piece on the theme of “Gender-informed mobility planning, governance and policy in African cities: status, barriers, ways forward.” Through this invitation, VREF welcomes expressions of interest (EoI) for a commissioned work on this theme. Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship
The Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship for Sustainable Transport and Energy Efficiency awards exceptional candidates a maximum of $10,000 each to advance transformative research in efficient and sustainable transport. One scholarship will be dedicated to the support of a young researcher from the African continent.
