Urban Freight in Delhi: Characteristics and Mobility Restrictions

Freight Trip Generation (FTG) modeling is crucial for freight decision makers considering the use of  mobility restrictions as an intervention to reduce freight externalities. The authors have conducted establishment surveys and interviews to study FTG modeling and mobility restrictions  in Delhi and present their findings.

  • Transportation and allied departments at various levels of government, including, specifically in India, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways
  • Urban Planning and Transportation Authorities, including, specifically in India, the Ministry of Urban Development, all smart city Special Purpose Vehicles and Police

Key Messages:

  • Non-motorized and motorized two-wheeler trips in Delhi form a significant proportion of urban freight, and are ripe for detailed studies that can highlight insights/solutions relevant globally
  • In most sectors, trip generation models for Delhi follow trends similar to those in other countries
  • Many establishments are already using Off-Hour Deliveries (OHD) without any incentives
  • Mobility restrictions have not been implemented in consultation with stakeholders, and their impact has not been evaluated systematically
